James (Jim) F. Northup, 73, of Fayetteville, AR. died Tuesday, September 30, 2014 at Washington Regional Medical Center. He was born December 10, 1940 in Ft. Smith, the son of Harry and Fletta Northup. He was the eldest of four brothers.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Jerry Northup.
He graduated from Ft. Smith High School in 1958 and went on to attend Russellville Polytechnic College where he was voted Agri-King and graduated in 1960.
Jim attended the University of Arkansas where he was a member of the ROTC and graduated in 1962 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Animal Husbandry.
He became farm manager for the Agriculture Department at the University of Arkansas. Later, he became a field agent and teacher for the Benton County Extension Office in Bentonville. He was also manager for the University of Missouri dairy farm in Maryville, MO. Returning to Fayetteville, he became farm manager for the Verna Lee Dash Goff Farm. He retired from his own successful landscaping business in the Fayetteville area.
His passion for nature and anything outside continued as he worked on his own property raising cattle. His goal was to have 50 head.
Jim is survived by his wife, Alene Northup of 33 years. They married on May 16, 1981. He is also survived by two brothers, Martin Northup and wife Lynn of Atlantic Beach, FL. and Ernest Northup of Little Rock, AR.; six children, Rowdy Northup of Tulsa, OK.; John Northup and wife Rachel of Fayetteville; Janice Swagerty and husband Eric of Washington State; Annette Caldwell and husband Austin of Granite City, IL.; Debra Brach and Rachel Wallace of Tulsa, OK.; 12 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild as well as many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Friday, October 3, 2014 at Beard’s Chapel.
The family requests that memorials take the form of donations to the American Diabetes Association, 1732 Moberly Ln., Ste. B, Bentonville, AR. 72712 or the Washington County 4-H Foundation, 2536 N. McConnell Ave., Fayetteville, AR. 72704.

We are going to miss Jim. He was a good friend and neighbor. He was always ready to lend a helping hand, and offered advice when it was needed. We admired his dedication to family and community.

Jim has been a part of our lives since 1996. His knowledge, kind and patient counsel and ability to get things done has helped us immensely over the years. We will miss him greatly. Please accept our heartfelt condolences to his family.

It was a pleasure growing up with Mr. Northup as our neighbor. He was always so kind, and such a hard worker! He will be missed!
We will always remember Jim as a kind man with a ready smile, who was always there for anyone who needed his help. May the peace of God and the love of family and friends be with you during this difficult time. We are sorry for your loss.
Mr. Northup was such a nice man to live next door to in all my years growing up. It seems surreal that he’s gone. He had such a love for the outdoors and always amazed me with his abilities and knowledge. He will be missed! May God grant peace and comfort upon your family.
Have been trying for days to think of what to write–it’s like the enormity of the loss is so much greater than words. Heartfelt thoughts to Alene, and each of Jim’s children, grandchildren, brothers, and other family members. We remember so well when Jim and Alene married, Jim said we won’t have any of this step stuff and he lived up to that by being a dad to Debra and Rachel for the last 33 years, giving them two dads. Fond memories of Jim will always be with us and cherished.

I realize you may not remember me, since it’s been so many years, but I still remember you all fondly. Jim was always ready and willing to assist, and was an inspiration to me growing up. My prayers are with you all at this most difficult time.
I only recently heard of Jim’s passing, but I just wanted to leave a message to say how much I liked Jim and appreciated his fellowship during the five or so years we were around each other. He was a good man. He was missed in the interim and will continue to be. So glad I knew him and look forward to a future time.
