Dec 4, 2023

Teddy Michael Barnes, 71, of Fayetteville passed away Friday, December 1, 2023 at his home. He was born October 21, 1952 in Portageville, MO to Ed and Mearle Clark Barnes.

He was preceded in death by his wife Ruth Barnes; four brothers, Roland, Charles, Bill and Freddie Barnes; and two sisters, Bonnie Pilgrim and Trudy Cross.

Teddy was a fiercely loyal father, grandfather, and friend. Everyone who knew him, loved him and his wicked sense of humor. He played for the Arkansas Razorbacks Football Team from 1971-1975 and was known as “The Immortal Teddy Barnes”. Teddy enjoyed the sun, the beach, golfing, mowing the lawn, and sitting on the porch with family surrounding him. His favorite thing to do was sitting outside in the sun with his grandkids.

He is survived by three sons, Joe Barnes of West Memphis, AR, Victor Barnes of Elkins and Jared Barnes of Fayetteville; four daughters, Katelyn Barnes of Tulsa, OK, Theadra Reynolds, Dasiah Barnes, and Jessie Barnes, all of Fayetteville; three brothers, Bob, Jackie, and Dean Barnes, all of Lepanto, AR; three sisters, Debbie Tyler of Lepanto, AR, and Betty Vaughn and Agnes Smalling, both of Monterey, LA; and 9 grandchildren.

A “pot luck” memorial service will be held on Sunday, December 10, 2023 from 12:30-4:00 PM at the Elkins Community Center, 162 Doolin Dr, Elkins, AR 72727.

Cremation arrangements by Beard’s Funeral Chapel.

I did not ever meet Teddy but I attended the Razorback game in Little Rock in 1975 against Texas A & M where Teddy made one of the best pass catches I have ever seen in the deepest corner of the left South end zone for a touchdown. I will never forget that catch. That was our first score and we ended up beating Texas A & M handily that day. They came in ranked #2 in the nation and we were unranked. The game was nationally televised. I can still see him catching that pass over his left shoulder. What a day we had and Teddy got us going.

We were in the same grade in Lepanto school. I had classes with Teddy and played football with him . He was the most athletic person I have ever known. He was stronger and could run faster than any of the rest of us. I have not seen him in many years but I will never forget him.

i love the Ed Barnes family. I feel a special closeness because mother Eadith and Ed were twins. I am so sorry for your loss. I wish I could come to the memorial, but I am in poor health.
