Alice Ruth Shofner, 92, of Fayetteville, AR passed away Sunday, April 18, 2021. She was born in Newport, AR on October 24, 1928 to Robert and Bertha Elizabeth “Lizzie” (Bullard) Gilliaum.
Alice Ruth was a 1946 graduate of Newport High School and a 1951 graduate of the University of Arkansas. During her time at the U of A, on a blind date she met fellow student Keith Shofner, a young Navy veteran and they were married August 21, 1949. In the fall of 1951, Alice Ruth started her long career in education, accepting a teaching position at Elkins High School. A few years later she took a position teaching Home Economics at Hillcrest Junior High in Fayetteville. After a short hiatus to stay home with her small children, Alice Ruth was recruited in 1963 by Elkins superintendent Jim Carter to teach 2nd grade for one semester. That temporary arrangement lasted 44 years until her retirement in 2007 at the age of 78. Alice Ruth was a devoted educator and known for maintaining strict discipline in her classroom. Throughout her long career she taught hundreds of children and in some cases, multiple generations of Elkins families.
Alice Ruth was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ having worshipped for many years with the North Street and Baldwin congregations in Fayetteville. She was a strong supporter of 4-H having been heavily involved in 4-H activities in her youth, even spending 5 months abroad in 1948 in France and England through 4-H Youth Farm Exchange program. She was also the youngest person ever to receive the Governor’s Arkansas Travelers Award and she was the 1948 National 4-H Record Book winner. She and Keith were actively involved in promoting agriculture and were active in the American Angus Association and youth livestock showing. She enjoyed watching her grandchildren’s sporting and livestock showing events. She loved rooting for the Razorbacks, drinking her Diet Coke and getting her hair done at her twice weekly hair appointments.
Alice Ruth was preceded in death by her husband Keith, her parents, 5 sisters – Gladys, Ruby, Audrey, Alma and Eunice and 2 brothers – Paul and Dale.

Shofner Family, I am so sorry for your loss. I really enjoyed the years that I was Alice Ruth’s teaching partner. We had many good times. Once in my first year I told her that I thought I would do a painting art project in class. She said good luck. Afterward, I asked her why she didn’t tell me it would be a nightmare, she just smiled and told me sometimes you need to learn on your own. She will be missed.
So sorry to hear about Mrs. Shofner. She was truly an icon in the school system and community.

Shofner family,
I’m sorry for your loss. Y’all are in my prayers. She was a great teacher that both me, and my sister had the pleasure of attending her class. I can say she did have a strict class cause I got to feel her paddle more than once. I didn’t learn the first or second time to good! I definitely deserved every swat I got! She will be missed by all!
Bill, Bob and Renee, I’m so sorry to read that your mother has passed. She and mom shared a lot of good times and were good support for each other. I know she was especially good for mom after Daddy died. I’m sure they are catching up in heaven having one of their long conversations. You and your family are in my thoughts as prayers. Lisa
I’m sorry to hear of your loss. I remember working with Mrs. Shofner at Christmas program time when she was always game for anything crazy and funny we’d ask her to do (even dressing up like Elvis). I enjoyed teaching with her and will miss her.

An Elkins Icon. What a wonderful role model she was when I briefly taught at Elkins. My condolences to the family.
So very sorry to hear of Mrs. Shofner’s passing. I had her in 2nd grade as most of the Elkins youth did. She was a special person I have remembered her since my time in her class so very long ago.
I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Mrs. Shofner. She was not only one of my favorite teachers but also a beloved mentor throughout my childhood. I often recall and think of her fondly. My deepest condolences to her family, especially Bobby and Renee. Although I haven’t seen them since we were teenagers, I think of y’all often. My prayers for your comfort.
Mrs Shofner was my favorite teacher she always made science so much fun. She always had neat projects to do in science I remember one time in science we took a paper towel and a pinto bean and we put water on the paper towel and put our little bean on the paper towel and wrapped it up and then put it in a ziplock bag we got to watch our little bean sprout 🌱 and still to this day I remember how much fun that was then another time for science we learned about a rain forest she took a fish tank and made a rain forest and we could see the condensation turn in to rain it was so neat. She was a big inspiration and influence in my life. Her family is in our thoughts & prayers. She had a heart of gold and she will be sorely missed by many.
An Elkins icon, she will be greatly missed. She was a wonderful role model to many students and teachers, including me in my brief teaching career.
My condolences to the family during this difficult time.

So sorry for your loss. Alice Ruth was a very interesting entertaining person. She will be missed.
It is with sadness that I read of the passing of Mrs. Shofner. At the same time, it is gratifying that she led so rich a life, and that her legacy will be passed down through her very large and successful family.
I feel honored to have been associated with Mrs. Shofner at Elkins Schools. With her get down to business approach, along with her sense of humor, she was a joy to be around. However, it was her dedication to her students, and to education generally, that was so inspirational to me and others who had the privilege to work with her. The memories of her will be treasured.
Her family will be in my prayers. I am so sorry for your loss.

Dear Shofner Family, I am so sorry for your loss. This was a tough lady, but you could count on her help when needed. Just a story, Mike needed to go to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. I went to the mailbox on Tuesday and found out we would need to leave the next day to get there for the appointment. Mrs. Shofner found out what had happened and when we got back she had gathered together money to help with the trip and motel accommodations while there. I had no idea, but it was so appreciated. I loved working with her and will miss her.
