Floye Lee Chism, May 28, 1928~November 23, 2023

Nov 25, 2023

Floye Lee Chism, 95, of Fayetteville passed away peacefully on November 23, 2023 in Fayetteville. She was born May 28, 1928 in Goodlett, TX to G.Y. and Vera Gillespie.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, A.W. Chism; two children, Donna Hahn and Danny Chism; and one nephew, Chad Gillespie.

Floye loved good gospel preaching and she loved acapella singing and both could be heard throughout the house on any given day. She enjoyed singing and performing in a Sweet Adelines chorus for several years. Floye also enjoyed the company of cats and birds…usually not together. She taught a pet bird to sing “Jesus loves me” and to whistle “The Eyes of Texas” and “The Blue Danube” waltz. An accomplished artist, Floye enjoyed painting and occasionally selling her work in oil, acrylic and watercolor. More than anything she loved her Lord and Savior and she adored her husband A.W., and was proud to have served with him in so many loving congregations.

She is survived by one brother, Gladwin Gillispie; two children, Robin Chism Curtis (Steve Curtis) and Brian Chism (Karen Brown Chism); two nephews, Mark Gillispie and Shawn Gillespie; grandchildren, Steven Chism, Michael Chism, Michelle Hahn Bixel, Garrett Hahn, Danny Chism Jr, and Josie Chism Dunn; along with several great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM Monday, November 27, 2023 at Mt. Comfort Church of Christ in Fayetteville.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM until service-time at the church on Monday.

The family wishes to thank the nurses and caregivers with Circle of Life Hospice and the entire staff of Katherine’s Place at Wedington, as well as Beard’s Funeral Chapel.

Floye was gracious, kind, friendly–a lovely Christian lady. I knew her all through the 1970s–at North Street.

Mom just called to let me know “Lady Chism” had passed. That’s what I called her as a child, attending the North Street Church of Christ. I sat with her regularly and took notes while “Dub” preached. She was my Sunday school class teacher for a while and when I was a little older, she taught our Wednesday night Bible class. I can still see her to this day – her loving yet serious face as she looked at us one night and said, “There is one thing I want you to remember if you don’t remember anything else. It comes from Joshua 24:15, “… choose you this day whom you will serve…, but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” She repeated herself, then had us repeat after her. I have always remembered that and have recalled it many times on the road of life. She was such a loving, gracious woman. I always thought she was so beautiful and had such a warm, wonderful voice. I remember thinking that she looked like the Queen a little when I was younger. She was a queen to us, and I will always remember her. Thank you, “Lady Chism” for your beautiful life, your love, and your Godly guidance and role model. It is so fitting that you passed on Thanksgiving. Heaven is blessed with you at their gates! And I know that “Dub” has now welcomed you Home! Hold me a seat… I will see you both one day. With joys in Heaven and tears on Earth, may God’s everlasting peace and comfort now be yours. I will always love and remember you.
