Jeanette “Jan” Laverne (Thacker) Hanks, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend, was born June 22, 1944, to parents, Vern and Charlene Thacker in Pine Bluff, AR. She went to be with her Lord August 25, 2024.

She is survived by her beloved husband Hardin “Bud” Hanks III and three children: Hardin (Hap) Hanks IV and his wife Angela of Fayetteville, AR; Lisa Gibson of Fayetteville, AR; Ayjai Anzaldi of Riverside, CA; eleven grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren; and sister Donna Campbell of Knoxville, TN.

Jan was a member of Genesis Church where a memorial service will be held August 31, 2024 at 10:00 AM. The service will be a live stream. Memorial will be officiated by Suzanne Bridges, Associate Pastor of Outreach and Women’s Ministry at Genesis Church, Epilogue by Susie Stewart, and music by Lily Dupuis.

In January of 1954, Jan moved with her family to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where she spent her formative years enjoying her favorite sports of sailing and most of all drag racing her 1957 Chevy purportedly without her parents’ knowledge. On January 25, 1963, she and Bud married in San Juan, Puerto Rico. They settled in Riverside, CA where they lived until their retirement in 1996. The next 5 years were spent traveling before settling in Fayetteville, AR in 2001.

Jan was a dedicated Registered Cardiac Nurse, practicing in Fontana, CA for 11 years. Her faith and love for the Lord, as well as her commitment to church and community, were paramount to her. In Riverside, CA she was instrumental in founding the Assist Care League and Teddy Bear programs.

Her heart for service extended to Genesis Church where she assisted in organizing The Clothes Closet, The Band, and Touched by Hope Ministries. She was also a member of The International Order of the Rainbow Girls and a Master Gardener.

Her personal ministry of sharing her faith was crafting and gifting beautifully beaded crosses.

Jan’s battle with cancer was approached with unwavering courage and faith. Her life was one of adventure, service and love. Her legacy will endure through future generations and her memory forever cherished.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Genesis Church of Fayetteville, 205 MLK Jr. Blvd, Fayetteville, AR 72701.

Jan helped me write a small article about 1st chronicles. It was so long ago that Bud might not remember, but I do, and that she encouraged me in many ways

Our family knew Jan and Bud and their young family many years ago here in Riverside, Ca. We had such fun getting together at Bud’s brother’s home, Jay.
Jan was such a nice, caring friend. My husband, Chip, and I are sending our love to the family.
    With Our Deepest Sympathy,
    Chip and Rosemary Morgan

Bud and Family, we were deeply saddened to learn about Jan’s passing. We had many good times together at Eden Lutheran Church as well socially here in Riverside. We remember Jans speech in Landis Auditorium upon graduating and a party you threw for Pats graduation, giving her vegetables instead of Roses. My relationship with you and Jay got me excused from a trial and jury duty. We still go to Eden but it’s not the same as the golden years. You, Jan, Larry and Judy Subriar were among the very first people we met at Eden.

God Bless you and the kids.

We are so sad to hear about the passing of Jan. Our hearts go out to the entire family…sending hugs your way. My mom (Judy Subriar) has been trying to reach out to you but no longer has a number that is good. If you could reach out to her at 951-323-1180 she would be so happy! We love you all, and praying for peace in the difficult time!

    Love,
    Tracy (Subriar)
