Smith_Page_1 copyLyle M. Smith, 75, of Fayetteville, passed away Saturday, January 6, 2018 at Pinnacle Health and Rehabilitation Center in Rogers.

Born March 28, 1942 in Spearsville, Louisiana, Union Parish, he was the third son of Elder John Lee Smith and Delma Wall Smith.  He was reared and received his early education in Spearsville, Louisiana.  A life-long sports fan, he was proud to be a left-handed pitcher on the 1959 Louisiana Class B, State Baseball Championship team in Baton Rouge, pitching for two winning games.

Moving to Pine Bluff after graduation, he worked at International Paper Company, retiring in July 2003 after 42 years, 10 months of service.

A history buff, Lyle particularly enjoyed studying the Civil War, World War I and World War II.  He volunteered for several years at the Arkansas Railroad Museum in Pine Bluff, sharing the history of trains with visitors.  He also enjoyed genealogy, researching his family, his wife’s family, and the families of his daughter-in-law and son-in-law.  For many years he was one of the family historians and worked with his cousins to organize family reunions in Louisiana and Texas in honor of his grandfather, Woody K. Smith.

Always a voracious reader, Lyle became a strong supporter of the Greenland Library after moving to Northwest Arkansas a few years following his retirement.

He was a long-time member of First Baptist Church of Pine Bluff and a 3rd degree Master Mason.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers: John W. “Wimp” Smith, Vernon D. Smith and Carl A. Smith.

Survivors include wife, Charlene “Kitten” Asberry Smith, the love of his life for 56 years; son, Randy Smith and his wife, Mille; daughter, Peggy Smith Hart and her husband, Gene; grandchildren, Piper and Adam Hart, all of Fayetteville; along with three sisters-in-law, two brothers-in-law and many nieces and nephews, with whom he loved sharing family stories.  He also is survived by the remaining members of the Spearsville High School Graduating Class of 1960, with whom he felt a great fondness and closeness.

Cremation will be followed by a private, family graveside service in the Old Bellwood Addition of Graceland Cemetery in Pine Bluff, to be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to several causes important to Lyle.  For his love of his family roots, donations may be made to the Spearsville Cemetery, c/o Ned and Mary Barron, 1067 Spearsville Road, Spearsville, LA. 71277.  For his love of history, donations may be made to the Arkansas Railroad Museum, P.O. Box 2044, Pine Bluff, AR. 71613.  To honor his love of reading, donations may be made to the Friends of the Greenland Library, The Greenland Library, P.O. Box 67, Greenland, AR. 72737.  And for his love for his long-time church family, donations may be made to the First Baptist Church of Pine Bluff, 6501 South Hazel Street, Pine Bluff, AR. 71603.

From 34th Street in PB to the Railroad for another 30+ years and then to NWA for another 10 or so our paths have crossed several thousand times. The little lady and the gentle giant both as kind and gracious as each other. So very sorry to read about Lyle’s passing but what a legacy he left. May the Good Lord Comfort you and your family.

To our dear cousins: Charlene, Peggy, Randy, Adam and Piper,
My sincere condolences and prayers in the loss of “Sweet” Lyle. He will so be missed. He was such a good man and his good works and personality, friendliness, love for family, will always stand out in my mind. He had little nicknames for us, for me it was LaDot when I lived in La Porte then KeDot when I moved to Kemah. He was just such fun and showed so much affection and care. I will never forget, even when he wasn’t too well, he and Carl showed up for my sister Teresa’s funeral. He had such a pleased look on his face when I must have displayed shock on my face. I regret not to be a part of his memorial, but know I will be there in spirit. Love to all. Dottie

Jerry and I send our heartfelt sympathy to our dear cousins, Charlene and family. We were so sad to hear of Lyle’s passing. He was such a dear man, so funny, mischievous, quick-witted, sincere, very intelligent, kind, and full of Christian love for his family and friends. It was such a pleasure for all of us Texas cousins to get to know Lyle and family better through our Smith Family Reunions and the get-togethers before and afterward! God bless and be with Charlene and the family, and may God wrap you in His comforting love during this hard time.

Lyle was such a loving and caring person.
I think that he probably never met a stranger.
His faith in God showed through his love for his family,
his church and extended in his support of friends and relatives.
Thanks be unto the Lord Jesus Christ, we know and are
greatly comforted that he is with the Lord and his loved
ones who have preceded him into their Heavenly
Mansions. He has left the place of frequent goodbyes and
now resides in Heaven, the place of eternal hellos!
May our God minister and comfort your hearts Charlene, Randy and Peggy and your families.

I cry to think I will never again hear one of Uncle Lyle’s stories, or him telling me, “You ugly thing, you look just like your mother” — A huge compliment. But I am glad he is no longer hurting. I know the last six months have been hard on him and on his family. I know he is now at peace, but I wish he could be at peace and still be with us. Love to Charlene, Randy, Peg and their families.
