Mary Lou Easterling Newport, 88, of Fayetteville, passed away Wednesday, January 13, 2021 at her home in Fayetteville.  She was born October 3, 1932 in Fayetteville to Asie and Pearl Sutton Easterling.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 54 years, Jim Newport.

Mary Lou was a key member of the 1950 Huntsville Eagles Womens Basketball team that won the State AAU Tournament.  She was a long-time member of Wiggins Memorial United Methodist Church in Fayetteville (now known as Genesis Church).  Mary Lou spent 15 years working at Root School as a library aide prior to her retirement.

She is survived by a daughter, Melissa Newport of Fayetteville; a son, Bill Newport of Hot Springs; two grandchildren, Jay Newport and wife, Sarah and Emily Newport; and two great-grandchildren, Holly and Thomas Newport.

A private family graveside service will be held at Mt. Comfort Cemetery under the direction of Beard’s Chapel.

There is no scheduled visitation.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Morningside Assisted Living in Fayetteville for seven years of love and care for Mary Lou.
