Shirley Deane Lasse, July 18, 1936~April 16, 2018

Apr 17, 2018

On July 18, 1936, in Alabama, Shirley Lasse, the youngest of nine children, was born to Archie and Josey Smith. The family moved to Texas when Shirley was a young child.

Encouraged by an older brother to attend Camp Peniel in Texas, Shirley committed her life to following Jesus and to serving him as a missionary in Africa.

When the time came for her to begin her college studies, she was blessed with the opportunity to complete her bachelor’s degree at Wheaton College, in Chicago, Illinois. After  graduating with a degree in English education with a French minor, she attended Moody Bible Institute. While studying there she met the man she loved, who eventually asked her to marry him. Phil and Shirley were married June 14, 1958. Four years later, they, with their first born child in tow, made their way to the East African country of Kenya, where Phil and Shirley served for more than 25 years as missionaries.  Shirley endured some heart wrenching circumstances in the first year and a half of her missionary career, including the loss of her father and mother, and of her infant daughter, Kara.  But our faithful God used these “experiences of suffering” to fashion in Shirley a remarkably resilient faith and a love for, and understanding of God’s Word, which sustained her throughout her fruitful lifetime.

After more than 25 years of service in the arena of overseas missions, God directed the Lasses’  path to Northwest Arkansas. There, with the strong support of their local church, University Baptist Church, they together launched a ministry to international students at the campus of the University of Arkansas, which had far-reaching, and eventually worldwide, impact. They led this ministry, known as International Student Christian Association (or ISCA) for more than thirteen years until Phil was taken home by His Heavenly Father.  After Phil’s death, Shirley continued her ministry involvement in discipling and teaching international students for fifteen years, often hosting groups of all sizes and nationalities in her home. Among her many extraordinary gifts and callings, Shirley was a woman of great faith and prayer, who faithfully persisted in these throughout her years of service in God’s kingdom, almost until the day of her own entrance into heaven. She made her grand entrance there on Monday, April 16 at about 3 PM, leaving this world as a result of complications from congestive heart failure and pneumonia.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Phil, and her first daughter, Kara, her parents, and eight siblings.  She is survived by three children, and their spouses–Clark and Joyce Lasse, Kim and Chris Holcomb, Kelly and Lorrie Lasse–her ten grand children and five great grand children and numerous extended family. She leaves behind a great legacy of faith, with a profoundly life transforming impact on countless lives all over the world, all of whom will remain forever grateful for her outstanding example, and for the godly and loving influence she’s had on us all.

A celebration of her life will be held at University Baptist Church in Fayetteville, Arkansas on Friday, April 20, 2018 at  9:30 AM, officiated by Pastor John Mueller.  Visitation will be Thursday, April 19, 2018 from 5-7 pm at Beard’s Funeral Chapel. Gifts in her memory can be made to Global Outfitters, PO Box 8926 Fayetteville, 72703 and designated to the Uganda Exodus Project, or to International Student Christian Association, PO Box 8055, Fayetteville, 72703.

I rejoice in the life and ministry of Shirley Lasse. She was a close friend during our high school days in the Minnetex Community Church. Though a bit younger, she followed me in her years at Moody. I shall never forget how the young men at Moody were instantly wowed by her good looks and Southern drawl, It didn’t take long for them to discover that this was a serious-minded young woman with a purpose. Phil discovered those qualities and together they spent a wonderful life, serving their Lord together in Kenya and in Arkansas. May God comfort her family and friends in the loss they feel and assure their hearts in knowing that she has finally reached home where Phil was waiting.

We lived at Kijabe 4 years when Art worked with Phil in Kijabe at the press-Art as a journalist & Phil as an artist. Shirley was gracious, kind, full of laughter and joy and a great role model for me. What a special woman of God!

Shirley is reason I became interested in going to RVA. Phil and Shirley would come to church (Tulsa Bible Church) and talk about Kenya. Shirley would describe what it was like for her to teach PE, when she wasn’t trained for it. So I decided then I was going to RVA and the PE teacher and coach!! The Lord worked it out. I am so grateful for Shirley’s influence on my life. Memories of her are very precious!!
To family what a blessing to have a “precious jewel” to remember.

Phil and Shirley were good friends of my parents and folks we grew to admire and love as well. That blessed so many lives with their love, joy and Faith on God. Heaven must be rejoicing, but we will be praying for those of you “left behind” that God will comfort and give you peace in the dark s ahead. Tim and Annie(Armes) Tidenberg

It is with profound regret that I hear of the passing of a good friend, Shirley Lasse. My husband Chuck and I, were supporters of their ministry and hosted them in our home on several occasions. Their ministry to international students st the University of Arkansas was incredibly fruitful and unique. Heaven is welcoming Shirley home today.

Throughout life, Shirley remained “The Yellow Rose of Texas” by which she was known at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, where we first met and I introduced her to Phil Lasse whose mother was my school teacher at mission school in the Belgian Congo and whose father was a close friend of my parents since the time they met in Paris while studying French in preparation for serving in Africa. At Phil and Shirley’s wedding, Shirley sang, “Saviour, Like a Shepherd Lead Us” and that request was fulfilled throughout their lives as they followed Christ closely. Shirley was terrific with words as seen in her formal and informal letter-writing. I’m so glad she called a couple months ago, saying she wanted to keep in touch with her friends. I will always remember her as someone who was passionate about and effective in fulfilling The Great Commission. After Jesus and family members, I’ll be looking for you, Shirl, when we get to heaven. Much love to Shirley’s family. Vivian (Huber) Johnson

I have fond memories of Shirley (and Phil) from my years at RVA. I remember meeting them when their daughter, Kim, was at the school and I was a new missionary. Years went by, I again met up with Shirley when she visited the AIM Retirement Center. I will always remember her smile and depth of love for her God. Praying for her extended family as they celebrate her life and faith and look forward to seeing her again.

Shirley had a profound influence on my life as well as thousands of others. I lived next door to Phil and Shirley for two years and was very involved in ISCA. Their sacrifice on behalf of others, devotion to prayer and open hearts of hospitality are characteristics that have shaped my thinking and heart for the Lord. She will be greatly missed but I know that she is rejoicing with Jesus.
I am lifting up the family in my prayers. I love you Clark and Joyce!

It was with profound sadness and great joy that we learned of Shirley’s graduation to Heaven on the very day that the RVA Class of ’67 convened in Oracle, AZ, for our belated 50-year Reunion. Several in our class expressed fond memories of Phil & Shirley from our RVA days at Kijabe. They were both a blessing as they shared their lives and influenced our lives. Thank you, Shirley, for your love and compassion as you helped guide us through those life-forming years of our lives. Blessings on your families, Clark, Kim, & Kelly, in the coming days of mourning and rejoicing in Shirley’s life and memory.

We have many wonderful memories of Phil and Shirley Lassee. Our first year at Kijabe we lived in the house that they had built. Unfortunately their ministry at RVA had finished by the time we arrived in 1977. We had the privilege of helping to care for their children at RVA. We had the opportunity of meeting this precious couple when they returned to Kijabe to visit their children and many friends. One of Phil’s original oil painting of a buffalo with Longonot in the background hangs in RVAs main office. It was a gift from them when their last child graduated from RVA. After Phil passed from this life I was in communication with Shirley as I was the Office Manager at RVA. We kept prints of several of Phil’s animal prints to self to missionaries who wanted a keepsake from Kenya. Phil was a very talented artist and Shirley was a very gentle and loving beautiful lady. Jim and I left RVA in 2003. There were still some of his prints in the main office when we left. Money from these prints should go to Phil’s family now that Shirley is no longer on this earth. I am praying that someone will see this and follow through in helping locate these prints and see that the money from them get to his children and grandchildren. This is part of Phil and Shirley’s legacy. I thank the Lord for this dear couple who shared their lives and talents for God’s glory.
