Verda Lynn Watson, was born January 13, 1943 in Fayetteville, Arkansas to Manuel Sr & Velma Buchanan. She flourished in the Fayetteville School District, making friends and meeting the love of her life Bennie Watson. To this union there were 10 children.
Verda accepted Christ at an early age and became an active member of The Historic St. James Missionary Baptist Church, while serving in several capacities and being a faithful member. She fell in love with singing and joined the Mass Choir as well as Senior Choir. She was an avid member of the Legends Ministry. She was honored to be selected as lead vocalist on the St. James Mass Choir: The Sunday Morning Experience.
Verda worked at Washington Regional Medical Center for 29 years as a PBX Operator. She loved her community and was an active volunteer/advocate at EOA. Following in the footsteps of family she became an Eastern Star member of Ozark Chapter #295. She also spent time working as a bus monitor assisting, caring, and creating bonds with children with unique needs. During her spare time, she enjoyed traveling, exercising and gardening. As an active member of her community, she enjoyed volunteering on a weekly basis at the food pantry. Verda loved attending sporting events/ ball games and supported her kids, grandkids and other children she encountered.
She is survived by her husband Bennie Watson; one brother Archie Buchanan (his children Peria Smith, Douglas Barker) six children and four bonus children – Kyle Thomas of Fayetteville, AR, Kimberly Thomas of Garland, TX, QeShawna Thomas of Fayetteville, AR, Randy Watson of Fayetteville, AR, Ami Cleveland (TJ) of Manhassett, NY, Jami Hall (Carlos) of Fayetteville, AR, Eugene Watson of Fayetteville, AR, Kendra Watson of Fayetteville, AR, Laray Watson of Fayetteville, AR, and Lavelli Watson of Fayetteville, AR; 15 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren; and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews.
Verda was preceded in death by her parents Manuel Sr and Velma Buchanan and brother Manuel Buchanan Jr.
Her memories will forever remain a part of our hearts. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was known to her children as V-Dub and to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren as Maw-Maw. She enjoyed every moment of life she experienced. The smiles, kindness and laughter will be greatly missed.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 PM Tuesday, August 23, 2022 at Beard’s Chapel.
Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Wednesday, August 24, 2022 at St. James Missionary Baptist Church. Interment will follow in the Fayetteville National Cemetery.
